Victoria du Toit obtained a BA Fine Arts (cum laude) degree from the University of Pretoria in 1996. She taught Art and English at various high schools, including four years of teaching Textile Design at the Jack Meyer Art Centre in Paarl. In 2009, she obtained an MPhil (Illustration) from the University of Stellenbosch. She has since taken part in various group exhibitions, contributed illustrations to a children’s picture book written by Winnie Nel, as well as a cookbook,Star Fish, written by Daisy Jones (Quivertree). In 2018 she was awarded the “Best in Show” award at the inaugural exhibition of the International Watercolour Society of South Africa.
During her MPhil studies, Victoria majored in botanical illustration. Her work takes inspiration from the plant and natural world. She is interested in using plant images as symbols which portray humanity. Plants act as symbols and representative images of self. While she works mainly in watercolour, she is also interested in the spontaneous fluidity and layering that comes from working in looser, larger oil paintings.
